Adley chose Helen Keller for her 3rd Grade Writers Tea.
The assignment was to chose a famous person and read a biography about them. Then on the day of the Tea, to personify that person in dress, action and to give a three minute speech. A presentation board and props helped with more information.
Adley worked hard on the project for several months, reading several biographies and portions of others. She wrote her own speech and practiced it enough times that she had it memorized on the day.
Helen Keller photographs from her childhood in 1880's through her final public years in the 1960's.
Props included (from left to right):
Muffin tin and tennis balls to show how the braille cell is introduced to blind preschoolers
A printed copy of the braille alphabet
A framed photograph of lifelong friend and teacher, Anne Sullivan
The manual alphabet as shown in the library book
A copy of the biography Adley read to prepare for the project (Helen Keller by Margaret Davidson).
12 books to represent the books published by Helen Keller during her lifetime.
The whole school was invited (even kindergarten) to the Writers Tea to walk around and listen to the various speeches and to collect autographs from the famous people. Adley kept a tally and reports that she recited her speech to 60 people including students, parents and teachers.
