Adley learned about the Rainforest in third grade. As their project for the curriculum fair each third grader chose a rainforest animal to study and present to the class. Adley chose the Red Panda, did her research and created a power point presentation. At home, they were to make a model of their animal using any material they chose.
Here's the start of the stuffed animal Red Panda.
The plan, buy furry fabric.
Create a pattern and cut it out.
Fabric glue the pieces together and stuff!
The planning, the tracing and the cutting.
A full size red panda is approximately 13 lbs or about the size of our cat.
Ears!
We spent a lot of time with the fabric glue making some great face pieces, the legs and starting on the striped tail.
FAIL!
The fabric glue won't work with the furry fabric and was definitely not strong enough for the size and stuffing we had in mind.
Sewing machine it is!
We just have to finish cutting out our pieces and sew them altogether.
Challenge #1 - teach Adley to sew
Challenge #2 - our model was quickly producing a larger than life Red Panda
Adley picked up on the sewing machine rather quickly.
Challenge #3 - the Red Panda has a striped tail which required A LOT of sewing!
Red Panda parts...
Finally, Adley has some pieces we can stuff.
Let's hope the stitches are strong enough.
We have a headless Red Panda!
We made a great Panda head, a great body and a great tail. Next, we just needed the three pieces to stay together long enough for the curriculum fair. Did we mention this animal was getting rather big?
Finished Red Panda.
With a head this time!
SUCCESS!
